So you made
it. You’ve earned yourself a shot at a job
interview for your favorite job or simply the post you applied for. You are
happy you made it but you are nervous too. That’s very much normal and its okay
to be a little terrified but hey, what about those dreaded questions,
especially that “How to introduce yourself in an interview?
As soon as
you realize you’re going to have to introduce
yourself first, you are probably preparing a description script right now.
Probably the usual like “My name is blah blah, I grew up in blah blah town, and
I got my bachelors from blah blah university” etc.
The same old
same old! The moment you start off with that, the interviewer will realize soon
you are just like the other candidates and get disappointed rather quickly.
Most of the interviewees interpret these questions as ice breakers and fail to
take the question serious and just loosely describe themselves but what
interviewers are looking for is ‘How’ you introduce
yourself.
Keep your
introduction short:
The art is
to tell the interviewer everything about yourself that’s relevant and correlated
to the post you are applying for. To lighten up the situation, you can share
your hobbies and interests but don’t get carried away and stick to the job
questions.
Don’t speak
of what’s already in your resume/CV:
As soon as
one hears the question, he or she starts to give out the information that’s
already with the interviewer. It’s unwise to repeat what’s already there in
your resume/CV, unless your interviewer specifically asks you to remind him,
otherwise that’ll show you aren’t confident enough. But you SHOULD highlight
your skills and achievements and your expertise in your line of work. If you
have any past working experiences, don’t miss any chance to tell the
interviewer about it.
Mention your
goals and things related to the position you’re applying for:
You want to
let your interview know you know about your job unlike anything else. Convey
your goals which benefit the company as well as yourself. Your goal could be
that either work your way up to a leading post or get a good enough experience
to be able to bring something new that might benefit the company overall.
Avoid giving
a biography of yourself:
Your
interviewer probably doesn’t care where you grew up and where you studied
college or what you do in your free time and how many members you have in your
family. It’s okay to share some personal details but you need to know when to
stop since you are at a job interview
and your motive is to get yourself that job. So, introduce yourself but make it short yet appealing and veer it
towards work perspective. Focus on your skills and tell them to your
interviewer which will help you get the work.
A strong
start can start with you saying for example, “I’m XYZ and I’m into XYZ field. I
have worked in XYZ Company for 2 years and I’m looking forward to stepping up
to explore more about this technology and gain good working experience.
OR
“I have worked as Angular developer and I have
leaded a team of 3 as well. I am very punctual in time and don’t miss my
deadlines. I keep my working environment solid professional.
Don’t be cocky about it:
It’s a good
thing to be confident about what you say, about your achievements and goals,
but that will get you on the bad side of your interviewer in no time. Your
overconfidence could even backfire if the interviewer counters your answers
with more detailed questions. Keep a light and lively tone.
In the end,
an “How to introduce yourself in an interview” question
doesn’t really have a correct or a right answer. It also depends on your tone,
your posture and your field of focus. The general things to keep in mind are
what you read above. Do a good amount of Research on the Company which has
called you for the job interview, so that you know the company’s goals
and its business intelligence. That way you’ll know which qualities you should
include in your introduction.
That being
said, I wish you the very best of luck!
