Software Development Vs Software Testing Career

Software development and Software testing, both are core fields having different sets of expertise and they are linked to each other for producing the accurate software product. If you think you can make good software only with the development team, then you’re taking risks from the user point of view and may suffer in the long run.

Salary Comparison:
Many Job Seekers think that software testers and software developers have huge difference among them regarding everything like software developers get more salary as compared to software testers. In reality, this is not right. This depends on many factors like the company you are working for, the type of work you’re doing and your experience in particular domain. Most of the time, companies treat both skills as same and do not discriminate the salary based on the work type. Salary of a developer and tester with same experience is similar in almost all companies. In fact, there are also many companies (like NASA, Google and even Microsoft), which are paying less salary to developers than their testers. Testers with domain skills and having experience are in more demand than developers of same experience and this might be the reason for this salary difference in these companies.
Anyhow, the salary difference depends on skills of the candidate. Some QA persons get prominently higher salary based on their technical skills, which is in demand for that company. Same things developers hold too because the thing which is drawing a line between developers and testers, totally depend on their skills.
Future Comparison:

Testing and Development are different careers having different skill sets among them. In coming days, I hope that these careers will have equal opportunities. But it is recommended that you must select your career based on your interest and of course skills.
If any of you think that development is more important than testing then you hold the responsibility to challenge them.
Testing has equal importance as compare to development; it’s not a big deal now to understand this logic! If we just focus on the working and compare them than somehow testing is even more important than development. There are unlimited examples and scenarios of software failures and software rejection due to defects and errors and those defects have direct impact on the revenue loss, human efforts, time and I don’t think any company would like to ignore software testing to avoid such situation.

In the end, important thing is that you should not choose your career based on the salary or any other present circumstance because with right skills and hardworking, you can grow in any career and be proud of yourself.
